Cat runs have literally revolutionized all of my cat’s lives.
You can’t compare having to lock them in the house when you ‘re away or at night compared to leaving them to have the freedom of being in their cat runs.
More and more we are having to be diligent to protect our cats from all sorts of potential risks to their safety. Sadly, this includes protecting them from other people in some instances.
You see cat runs give your cat some sense of freedom but still keep them safe when their “mum’ or ‘dad’ are not around to keep an eye on them.
There are certain things you should consider before installing cat runs. Most importantly what material is going to be used for the outside walls. The material you choose ideally allows for your cat to look out and watch the world. Think for a moment if you were confined what would suit you. I have seen some lovely looking cat runs come cat enclosures made of wooden lattice. Now while this does look in most cases, very attractive, what if you were to choose a material with more visibility? It probably isn’t going to really offend anyone and your cat won’t be so bored because they will be able to see out.
Cats enjoy being able to actually see those birds twittering away. And at night cats will sit for hours just peering out into the night. Of course at night a complete new world happens. Lots of scurrying and rustling as the creatures of the night appear. It’s as interesting for cats as it is for us when we watch our favorite telly program.
Cat runs of course must always provide shelter from the weather. The obvious ones like rain and hot sun are easy. However don’t forget to check out which way the wind blows at your house. Cats will tuck themselves in out of the wind given a choice. Therefore you don’t want to build cat runs directly in the path of a wind tunnel. Once it is up it is often too late to undo all the good work and erect elsewhere.
Have you thought about how you are going to get water to your cat. If you have an irrigation system is it possible to hook into that and position a dripper over their water bowl. Better still put the timer on the retic and their bowl fills up at the same time each day. That will make one less job for you to do. Wash their bowl out regularly and everyone is happy.
You will be thanked for putting a comfy old chair at your little cat’s disposal. Cats especially like an old cane chair. Now they can sleep comfortably then roll over and do a job with their manicure on the side of the chair if they are in the mood.
Creating interest inside the cat runs will heighten the experience for your precious felines. Also it will make you feel good.
