There are so many stray cats on the streets and so many of these once belonged to someone. They were either lost or abandoned. The most common ways people lose cats is instead of using strong cat carriers to transport cats they try carrying them in their arms. If they manage to get the cat to the new destination they then fail to keep the cat in long enough to give it time to get to know where it is. Naturally it goes outside, jumps a fence and doesn’t know its way back.
People like to think some one else is going to take their lost cat in but unless that cat is extremely confident and friendly it has little chance of finding another home. The story gets worse for lost cats. Even the most confident and friendliest of cats will quickly lose their confidence in humans when they have been on the streets with no food or shelter trying to survive.
People actually shoo desperately starving cats off their property when they hang around looking for some food. Of course once these cats have been frightened off a couple of times they begin to distrust people. We can understand not everyone wants to take a stray cat in and give it a home but one telephone call to a cat shelter and the cat can be either collected or delivered to them. At least then there is no bad karma hanging over your head.
To avoid all of this people need to understand more about cats before they decide to take one on as a pet. Cats are fright and flight creatures which means when they are frightened they will run for cover. Therefore anyone who moves house and plonks their cat outside too early is going to lose that cat. At the first unfamiliar loud noise or fright the cat will take off and not know its way back. It will become another sad homeless cat statistic.
Lost cats commonly try and find shelter in drains. So if there are cat fanciers out there and you notice a cat in and out of a drain it may require your attention. Unless it belongs to a neighbor, it may very well be “Daisy” cat that someone lost while moving. They probably didn’t use a sturdy cat carrier to transport their cat or else they let the cat outside before the recommended time of three weeks. Now it is attempting to find some protection in a drain! So what happens when we have torrential rain?…cheers Dawn
